New staff roles at Veterans' Services

The law lets the Maine Bureau of Veterans' Services hire new leaders and service staff. These include a deputy director, a superintendent and deputy superintendent of the cemetery system, a supervisor and deputy supervisor of veterans' services, and veterans' services officers. Hiring needs approval by the appointing authority and must follow the Civil Service Law. At the same time, the law removes the "veteran claims specialist" job title from the authorized list. It does not set pay, number of jobs, funding, or start dates.

Only veterans can hold these bureau jobs

The law requires the director and the listed staff to be veterans under 38 U.S.C. 101(2) with an honorable discharge. Only veterans can hold those jobs. The law does not include exceptions, pay changes, or dates.
