Defibrillators and plans for school sports
Beginning in the 2026-2027 school year, each school unit must have a policy that gives access to automated external defibrillators (AEDs) at all school-sponsored athletic events on school property where students take part, including practices. The policy must state how a person can get to an AED. Any AEDs the school gets must be tested and maintained as the maker’s instructions say. Schools must tell local first aid or ambulance services where the AEDs are and what type they are. The law also requires each school unit to create and use a venue-specific athletic emergency action plan, based on national heart health or athletic training guidance, that explains how staff should use an AED to respond to sudden cardiac arrest or similar life-threatening emergencies at these events.
