AEDs and emergency plans at school sports

Beginning in the 2026-2027 school year, each school administrative unit must ensure AED access at all school-sponsored athletic events on school property, including team practices. The policy must say how people at the event can get to an AED. Any AEDs the school acquires must be tested and maintained per the maker’s instructions, and local emergency medical services must be told the device’s location and type. Schools must also have a venue-specific athletic emergency action plan, based on nationally recognized heart or athletic training guidance, that directs staff how to use an AED during sudden cardiac arrest or similar life-threatening emergencies.
