Privacy and choice in victim alerts
Victims can choose not to get automated notices and use other allowed methods. Facilities must keep your name and contact details private. They may share them only with counselors, advocates, or when the law or a court requires. Facilities must post written rules, outage plans, and a complaint process. They must have staff to answer victim calls and messages.
Statewide automated alerts for crime victims
The law creates a statewide automated notification system run by county sheriffs. It covers jails and county and regional correctional facilities. Sheriffs may hire a vendor for real-time notices. An advisory committee meets monthly with victim-service groups and DOC’s Office of Victim Services. Sheriffs must report to the Legislature by November 4, 2026. The law gives $140,000 in FY 2026-27 to DOC to support the system. The State Controller transfers $140,000 from Attorney General settlement funds to the General Fund by June 30, 2027.
