Broader investigations of licensed school staff

Investigation teams can look into school employees who hold or applied for a state education license, or are subject to licensure. This applies to people employed by Maine public and private schools under state education law. It strengthens oversight and student safety in schools.

Faster child abuse info sharing with schools

The Education Department can give the state health department records of complaints, misconduct charges, investigations, and discipline during an active child abuse or neglect case. Investigators can notify superintendents or school chiefs when there is an indicated or substantiated out-of-home abuse or neglect finding against a school employee. The Education Department may also alert school leaders to reports of suspected abuse when no agency is investigating, or when the school did not know. Superintendents and school chiefs are treated as people responsible for a student, so they can receive needed confidential records to care for and supervise the student. Shared information must be used only for its stated purpose and not re-shared, and the identity of the reporter is protected.
