Michigan students can skip workforce readiness testing

Starting in the 2026–2027 school year, students can skip the workforce readiness part of the Michigan merit examination. The exam covers 11th graders and 12th graders who did not complete it in 11th grade. A parent or legal guardian must sign the state waiver, available on the Michigan Department of Education website. The waiver must reach the student's district, intermediate school district, or public school academy by February 28 that school year. The department must work with business, manufacturing, and skilled trades groups on a letter explaining the test's purpose and benefits. Schools must give this letter to affected students and their parents or guardians by December 31 of the testing school year.
