Felony penalties for restricted Mackinac Bridge areas
The law adds Mackinac Bridge areas not open to or intended for public use to Michigan’s key facilities list. Intentionally entering or staying without permission is a felony when the area has a physical barrier and required signs. Signs must be conspicuous, at least 50 square inches, and use letters at least 1 inch high. At least one sign must be visible at every entry point. Penalties are up to 4 years in prison, a fine up to $2,500, or both. An open barrier during normal hours for official business is not a defense. The law preserves lawful assembly and peaceful petition rights and took effect immediately upon enactment.
