Mackinac Island gains control over ferry charges
The law authorizes Mackinac Island to license ferry services, charge reasonable license fees, set operating terms, and revoke licenses for violations. City control covers fares, baggage, early or priority boarding, and ferry-related parking charges on the island or mainland. The law sets no specific prices and requires no price increase or decrease. These powers require approval by a majority of city voters voting on the change at a regular or special election. The election must occur at least 60 days after the act’s effective date; the powers start 10 days after results are certified.
