Choose your appliance, vehicle, and tool fuel

Beginning July 1, 2026, Mississippi governments cannot ban or restrict the sale or use of appliances, farm equipment, motor vehicles, or lawn tools based on the fuel or utility they use. Permit offices cannot deny building or subdivision approvals only because you choose gas, electric, or L.P. gas appliances. Governments can still require service from authorized local utility providers and enforce building, fire, and safety codes and manufacturer safety instructions. Illegal uses are still banned. The law defines what counts as an appliance, a utility service, farm equipment, and which government bodies must follow these rules.

No dyed diesel in highway vehicles

Beginning July 1, 2026, it is illegal to use dyed diesel or kerosene in a motor vehicle on a highway unless the federal tax code allows it. Each unlawful use brings a $1,000 penalty, plus any taxes owed.
