Mississippi bans cell-cultured dairy

Beginning July 1, 2026, no person may manufacture, sell, or offer for sale in Mississippi a cell-cultured dairy product. The ban covers products made from animal cells grown outside a live animal to imitate or replace milk. These products will not be available through in-state sales.

Food sellers face stronger enforcement

Beginning July 1, 2026, the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce must inspect relevant food businesses after a credible complaint about meat mislabeling. It must stop sales when it has reasonable cause to suspect a violation and may secure the product. If the product is misbranded, the Department may order disposal instead of sale in Mississippi. Violations can bring fines of up to $500 per day, capped at $10,000 for the same transaction or occurrence; the Attorney General enforces stop or embargo orders in court after notice.

Stores must identify meat alternatives

Beginning July 1, 2026, products with manufactured protein cannot use a meat name without a clear qualifying term nearby. A trace amount of plant protein alone does not make a product misbranded. Stores must tell customers whether covered products are authentic meat or nonmeat; restaurants must mark inauthentic items beside the menu item in the same font size and style. Distributors and wholesalers must give sellers authenticity information, and the Commissioner may require handlers to keep records that verify compliance.
