Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 0 costs, 2 mixed.

Felony penalties for officer impersonation

Impersonating a state highway patrolman or unlawfully using the patrol uniform or insignia is a felony. Willfully pretending to be a law-enforcement officer is also a felony. Each offense carries a fine up to $5,000, up to three years in prison, or both. Other covered impersonation remains a misdemeanor, with a fine up to $500, up to six months in jail, or both. The stronger penalties aim to protect the public, but increase punishment for people convicted.

New marking rules for public vehicles

The law removes marking exemptions for up to three Pascagoula school security vehicles and vehicles used by certified state fraud investigators. Public vehicles must follow the applicable marking rules, while authorized unmarked vehicles remain allowed for sworn officers doing official work. Requests must explain why markings would hinder investigations or compromise airport or school security. Local approvals must be recorded in meeting minutes, with a certified copy sent to the State Department of Audit. The rules took effect July 1, 2025.
