Homeowners must file three copies

Beginning July 1, 2026, you must submit your Mississippi homestead exemption application in three copies. Give the original and duplicate to your county tax assessor and keep the triplicate as proof. If the original and duplicate are lost, you can file your triplicate with the county board. You must apply by April 1 each year. The Governor can extend the deadline up to 30 days if the courthouse or tax office is damaged.

State sets homestead exemption rules

Beginning July 1, 2026, the Mississippi Department of Revenue sets the rules for homestead exemption forms and records. County tax assessors and local boards must follow these statewide rules. This change is administrative and does not change who qualifies or how much the exemption is.
