Beginning July 1, 2026, state agencies can enter seller locations and collect samples for lab testing. Suppliers must keep a verifiable audit trail and give buyers documents that show origin. First violations get three days after written notice to fix; if not fixed, the fine is $500 to $1,000. Second is $1,000 to $2,000; third is $3,000 to $5,000; fourth and later are at least $10,000. Agencies can also suspend or revoke licenses. Knowingly breaking the rules is a misdemeanor with up to a $10,000 fine, up to six months in jail, or both. If you unknowingly relied in good faith on supplier documents, you are protected from penalties. Money from seafood fines goes to the Seafood Fund at Marine Resources; crawfish fines go to Agriculture and Commerce to run and enforce the law.
Beginning July 1, 2026, sellers of seafood and crawfish must show country of origin. Each item must be labeled Domestic, Imported, or list the country. If any imported product is mixed in, it counts as Imported. For foreign items, the label, menu, display, buffet, or ad must show Imported or the country in a font at least as large as the item name. What is served must match what is advertised. Restaurants can use one clear legend on the menu, and places that sell only domestic seafood can post a clear on‑site sign instead of listing origin for each item. Items that follow federal country‑of‑origin labeling are exempt from the state seafood labeling. But grocery stores, seafood markets, and other retail sellers of fresh or unfrozen seafood must still follow the state rules.
