State Aid Engineer; salary to be set by Governor, subject to rules of Personnel Board.

New rules for state road engineer

Beginning July 1, 2026, the Governor appoints the State Aid Engineer for a two-year term, subject to state personnel removal rules. The engineer must be registered and have at least eight years of experience as a county road or highway engineer, plus knowledge of rural road problems. The Governor sets the engineer’s salary under State Personnel Board rules, but the law gives no amount. The engineer may hire assistants and other staff, whose pay must match salaries for similar transportation department jobs. The engineer must post a $25,000 bond. Assistant engineers must post $10,000 bonds, and other assistants may be required to post bonds of up to $10,000. Travel costs actually incurred are reimbursed, and the engineer must report those costs to the Governor each month. Salaries, bond costs, and other office expenses come from the State Aid Road Fund before money is allocated to counties; the engineer submits payment requests and monthly reports of all spending. The four-year term provision for the engineer serving on July 1, 1985, remains in place.
