Nonprofit veterans groups no longer count as restaurants under Vicksburg’s recreation and tourism tax. These include Veterans of Foreign Wars posts, American Legion posts, Army Navy Clubs, and similar nonprofit veterans groups. Their sales are exempt from this local restaurant tax, not from all sales taxes. The change takes effect upon passage and lasts until the tax provisions expire on July 1, 2029.
The law extends Vicksburg’s restaurant and hotel tax authority until July 1, 2029. Each tax is capped at 2% of covered sales or room rentals and is added to customers’ bills. The hotel tax covers establishments with at least six guest rooms. Combined state sales taxes and applicable city and county local taxes cannot exceed 10% for either category. Before imposing a tax, the city must adopt a resolution stating its rate and start date and call an election. At least 60% of voters casting ballots must approve it. The state must receive the certified resolution at least 30 days before the tax starts. Revenue must fund recreation and tourism facilities or related debt payments, not the city’s general fund.
