Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.

Voters must approve Oakland food tax

Before any tax starts, the town must hold an election. Officials must publish notice weekly for three weeks. The first notice must be at least 21 days before the vote. The last must be no more than 7 days before. The tax passes only if at least 60% vote yes. The town must send a certified resolution to the state at least 30 days before the tax starts.

Oakland food tax up to 2%

The Town of Oakland can charge up to 2% on restaurant sales and prepared food at convenience stores. Sellers add this tax to your bill at checkout. This authority stays in effect through July 1, 2030. It applies only inside the town limits and supports tourism and parks.

State collects; money for parks and tourism

The Mississippi Department of Revenue collects and enforces the town tax. The Department keeps 3% to cover collection costs. The town gets the other 97% by the 15th of the next month. The town must keep the money separate and spend it only on tourism, parks, and recreation. An independent accountant audits these funds every year, paid from the tax money.
