Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 2 mixed.

Trainees can work under supervision

Beginning July 1, 2026, draftsmen, students, clerks‑of‑work, and similar employees may work without their own license while under a licensed architect’s instruction and supervision. The exemption applies only while they are under responsible control.

New ownership and licensing rules for firms

Beginning July 1, 2026, every active partner, member, stockholder, officer, director, or manager in mixed design firms must hold a current license in their home state. Any out-of-state firm doing business in Mississippi must have at least one active owner licensed as an architect in Mississippi. If landscape architects are owners, at least two‑thirds of the firm’s owners or leaders must be licensed architects or engineers, and landscape architects may own no more than one‑third. No firm gets an architecture practice certificate; only individuals do. Only a professional corporation or professional LLC may advertise as architects in Mississippi.

Architect control and liability rules

Beginning July 1, 2026, contracts for architectural services must be signed by someone who can bind the firm. A Mississippi‑licensed architect must have responsible control, and their name and seal must be on all architecture documents. Other firm leaders cannot override that architect’s professional judgment. Firms and individuals stay responsible for their own work. Leaders are only personally liable for others’ mistakes if they failed to provide responsible control.

Clear naming and license display rules

Beginning July 1, 2026, firms of architects, engineers, and landscape architects may use combined titles like “architects and engineers.” All public materials must show each person’s registration type, and the firm name must disclose at least one person licensed as an architect in Mississippi. Unlicensed employees may use business cards only if their job title is shown. Architects and landscape architects must post their license at their main office; not posting an architecture certificate can lead to revocation.
