More paths to get an LPN license

If you already hold an LPN license from another state, territory, D.C., or a foreign country and you meet Mississippi’s qualifications and have the required passing score, the board issues a Mississippi license by endorsement. For military‑trained applicants, military spouses, and new residents, endorsements follow Sections 73‑50‑1 or 73‑50‑2. Military medics—including Army Combat Medics, Navy Hospital Corpsmen, Air Force Aerospace Medical Service Specialists, and Coast Guard Health Services Technicians—may qualify by showing official proof of that training and two years of direct patient‑care experience after training. Former students can sit for the LPN exam if their transcript shows theory and clinical work equal to a practical nursing graduate and the school was accredited when they attended. Anyone with a practical nurse license that was valid on July 1, 1981 is treated as licensed under current law after paying the fee in Section 73‑15‑27.

Temporary LPN permits and exam rules

The Board of Nursing examines qualified applicants and requires a written exam it selects. The board sets passing scores and must set retake rules. Graduates waiting on Mississippi exam results can get a temporary permit (fee not over $25). An out‑of‑state LPN applying by endorsement can get a 90‑day permit, not renewable except by board action; military‑trained applicants, military spouses, and new residents follow Sections 73‑50‑1 or 73‑50‑2. LPNs in a reorientation program can get a 30‑day permit, and the board may extend it. The board may limit what work is allowed under temporary permits.

LPN applications: rules, checks, and fees

LPN applicants must file an attested board application, provide a high school diploma or equivalent, and official proof of finishing an approved practical nursing program. If English is not your first language, you must show English competence. You must submit fingerprints for state and FBI background checks. The board charges you the actual cost of those checks, plus an application fee up to $60. You must list your Social Security number(s) on the application (Section 93‑11‑64). The board may refuse applications from people convicted under Title 97 or other listed offenses. Nonpublic criminal history records the board gets are confidential and used only for licensing unless you consent, a court orders release, or they are used in a board hearing.

Only licensed people may use 'LPN' title

Only people licensed or with the privilege to practice as an LPN in Mississippi may use the title “Licensed Practical Nurse” or “L.P.N.” Others may not claim the title or use words or signs that suggest they are an LPN.

State agencies can support military bases

State and local agencies in Mississippi can sign intergovernmental support agreements with U.S. military branches under 10 U.S.C. § 2679. These agreements let them provide installation‑support services at bases located in Mississippi. This authority helps base operations and can support local jobs.
