Veterans Day events in public schools

Public schools in Mississippi observe Veterans Day with programs. Superintendents can invite uniformed military, veterans, or families of fallen service members. School bands may perform without students losing program credit. School staff who take part do not lose leave. This ensures students and staff can join without academic or leave penalties.

Official state holidays and local swaps

Mississippi law lists the official legal holidays. They are January 1; the third Monday in January and in February; the last Monday in April and in May; July 4; the first Monday in September; November 11; Thanksgiving as proclaimed by the Governor; any day the Governor names by proclamation; and December 25. If a listed holiday falls on a Sunday, the next day is the holiday. Cities and counties may swap one state holiday for Mardi Gras Day or another day. They cannot swap the third Monday in January or November 11, and must record the change in their minutes.
