Beginning July 1, 2026, it is illegal to use, try to use, or have a purse seine in the water to take fish within one mile of the shoreline in Jackson, Hancock, or Harrison Counties. The ban now also covers Jackson County. Violations face penalties under Section 49-15-100(2) of Mississippi law. County boards may propose rules on purse seines and trammel nets, and the state Marine Resources Commission may consider them when setting regulations.
