Committee meetings, report, and staff help

At its first meeting, the committee elects a chair and vice chair and sets rules for business and records. A majority of members is a quorum. It can meet as needed and must report findings and recommendations to the Legislature by December 1, 2026. The Department of Revenue must provide staff and support. The committee may request data and help from any state or local agency.

Temporary committee to review sales taxes

Beginning July 1, 2026, the law creates a Sales Tax Diversion Study Committee. It studies how sales tax money is split between the state tax agency and cities. It reviews diversion practices, city financial impacts, technology fixes, and oversight at the tax department. It prepares recommendations for the 2027 Legislative Session. The committee ends by January 1, 2027, unless the Legislature extends it.

Who serves on the sales tax committee

The committee has 16 members. They include the House Ways and Means chair, the Senate Finance chair, three senators named by the Lieutenant Governor, and three representatives named by the Speaker. The Revenue Commissioner serves as a nonvoting member. Other members are the State Auditor, the Mississippi Municipal League director, one city rep from over 50,000 people and one from under 50,000 (both named by the Governor), the Mississippi Economic Council and Business and Industry Political Education Committee directors, and a destination marketing organization rep (named by the Lieutenant Governor). Appointments are due within 30 days after July 1, 2026.
