Earlier deadline for mailed absentee ballots

If the Attorney General publishes that the U.S. Supreme Court has preempted state mail‑ballot rules, mailed absentee ballots must arrive by the day before the election to count. They still must be postmarked on or before election day. This applies to ballots sent by mail or common carrier, including voters temporarily outside their county. Until such a notice is published, ballots postmarked by election day can arrive up to five business days after the election and still count. Electronic or fax ballots for military and overseas voters follow separate rules.
