New commission to boost Ireland trade

The law creates the Mississippi-Ireland Trade Commission. Beginning March 17, 2026, it promotes trade and investment with Ireland. It also supports business and college exchanges, joint policy work, and encourages infrastructure investment. The commission may raise money by asking for donations, holding fundraisers, and accepting gifts, grants, and bequests.

Who serves on the trade commission

The Governor appoints 3 members; the Lieutenant Governor appoints 2 senators; the Speaker appoints 2 House members; and the Mississippi Economic Council president appoints 1. The Mississippi Development Authority director (or designee) serves ex officio, and the higher education commissioner (or designee) serves ex officio, nonvoting. Appointees must have ties to Irish affairs or Mississippi-Ireland trade. All first appointments are due by July 1, 2026. Initial terms are: Governor - one 1-year and two 2-year; Lieutenant Governor - one 3-year and one 4-year; Speaker - one 3-year and one 4-year; Economic Council president - one 1-year. After that, terms are 4 years. Members serve without pay and at the will of the appointing official. Vacancies are filled the same way for the rest of the term. The commission elects a chair, meets at least each quarter, and acts by majority vote with a quorum. These rules take effect March 17, 2026.
