5 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 2 costs, 2 mixed.
Beginning July 1, 2026, Mississippi licenses must show the sex recorded at birth. You cannot change that marker except to fix a clerical error, correct a birth misidentification from a verifiable disorder of sex development, or restore a previously altered license. Any person who must register as a sex offender will have a sex-offender mark on any new, renewed, or duplicate license or permit.
Beginning July 1, 2026, lawfully present noncitizens, or applicants without a U.S. Social Security number, can get a Mississippi driver’s license. The license states the person is not a U.S. citizen and expires when lawful presence ends. Out-of-state licenses issued without proof of lawful presence are invalid in Mississippi. Officers must cite those drivers for no license and refer them to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Judges and license staff must also make these referrals.
Beginning July 1, 2026, honorably discharged veterans can add "Vet" or a similar mark to a new, renewed, or duplicate license or permit. Bring a DD-214, Military Retiree ID, VA Medical ID or ID Card, or National Guard Form NGB 22 in person at a Mississippi Driver’s License Station.
Beginning July 1, 2026, using false papers to get a veteran mark on a license is fraudulent use of identity under state law. A person convicted of that act commits a felony.
Beginning July 1, 2026, you must give your Social Security number to the Department of Public Safety, and it is linked to your license number. Every license carries a full-face color photo that cannot be removed, and the photo is replaced at renewal. You may renew by electronic means, and an electronic license you can show on a phone or device is available under Department rules. The Department must issue rules to carry out these changes.
