Medicaid pays nearby out-of-state children7s hospitals

Beginning July 1, 2026, Mississippi Medicaid pays certain out-of-state children7s teaching hospitals in a city on the Mississippi River that borders Mississippi. A hospital must be university‑affiliated, licensed as pediatric, run at least five pediatric specialty training programs, and have 100+ beds for patients under 21. Payments happen only if CMS approves the increase and the state first receives the non‑federal share from a public entity (for example, a state university, community college, or local government). Any money the hospital gives that entity must be a bona fide donation. Payments use the hospital7s prior‑year Mississippi managed care use. The law states an intent to keep costs at or below in‑state levels and to avoid lowering in‑state hospital payments.

Children7s hospital payments end July 2027

This section takes effect July 1, 2026 and is repealed July 1, 2027. After July 1, 2027, Medicaid cannot make these special payments to the defined out‑of‑state children7s hospitals. Coverage at those hospitals then follows regular rules, not this program.
