Beginning July 1, 2026, schools with natural gas piping follow a set schedule. Test 50% of systems by January 1, 2027 and report results to the gas supplier before the 2027–2028 school year. Test the rest by January 1, 2028 and report before the 2028–2029 school year. After January 1, 2028, test every year and report before each school year; year‑round schools must finish testing and reporting by July 1. A pressure test done under a municipal code counts.
Beginning July 1, 2026, public, private, and charter K–12 schools that use or pipe LP gas must test their piping each year. Home schools are not covered. Tests follow NFPA 54, check that piping holds normal operating pressure, and all supply inlets and outlets are closed during the test. Only an authorized LP gas distributor or a permitted qualified installer may test. In year‑round schools, the distributor tests by July 1, or a non‑distributor must report results to the distributor by July 1. Schools must send results to the LP gas distributor before each school year and give written test dates and results; the distributor keeps the notice for at least one year. Test results must also be sent to the State Department of Education within 30 days, and leaks are reported to the district board and the State Department of Education (or to the responsible person for other schools). If a hazardous leak is found, or a required test was not done, the distributor stops service and cannot resume until repair or a passing test; for non‑district schools, the distributor is not liable for damages if it fails to stop service due to a missed test. The state gas division can help schools set up test procedures on request, and the state board may issue rules.
