Stronger wildfire response for Montana communities

Montana’s natural resources agency must fight a wildfire when it decides federal suppression within 5 miles of state or county protection is not consistent with state wildfire policy. This duty applies no matter who owns the land. The department can bill the responsible federal fire agency to recover its suppression costs when appropriate. This protects people and property and can lower costs for Montana taxpayers. The law takes effect immediately.
