State steps in on wildfires, can bill feds

The state fire agency must fight wildfires anywhere in Montana when it decides nearby federal suppression, within 5 miles of state or county protection, is not consistent with 76-13-104. This lets the state act fast to protect people and property. The agency can choose to bill the responsible federal protection agency to recover its suppression costs. The law does not set dollar amounts or a required billing process. The law takes effect immediately.

Property owners must reduce fire risks

If you own private property in Montana, you must manage your land to reduce wildfire hazards and prevent fires. This duty also applies to state and federal land managers on their lands. The law does not list exact actions or provide funding to help you comply. The law takes effect immediately.
