Ongoing $2 million for Colstrip water

The law creates a Colstrip water mitigation account in the state special revenue fund. Beginning July 1, 2027, the state credits $2 million each year from severance taxes into this account. The money is set aside to keep a water supply for the Town of Colstrip if needed. Every 10 years, the department reviews whether funding is enough and reports to the Economic Affairs Interim Committee.

Water help for Colstrip after plant closure

If a nearby coal-fired unit closes or retires and Colstrip cannot access water, the state transfers the account money to the town. The town can use the funds to pay costs to ensure a water supply. The money can only be used for these closure-related water problems.
