Montana electors meet Tuesday in December

The law changes when Montana’s presidential electors meet. They meet in Helena at 2:00 p.m. on the first Tuesday after the second Wednesday in December after the election. The Secretary of State gives each elector a ballot for president and a ballot for vice president. Each elector must mark both ballots and sign and print their name. The Secretary of State counts only ballots that follow the elector’s pledge; unmarked or pledge-breaking ballots are not counted. An elector who refuses, leaves a ballot blank, or breaks the pledge loses the seat, and a substitute elector is chosen to vote. The process repeats until all electoral votes are cast and recorded. The act takes effect immediately.
