2 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.

Ban on lab-grown meat with penalties

The law bans making, selling, holding for sale, or distributing lab-grown meat in Montana. A knowing violation is a misdemeanor with penalties under state food law. Licensed restaurants and stores that violate the ban face discipline under retail food licensing rules. If an owner or worker is convicted, the business license can be suspended. Inspectors can issue immediate stop-sale orders on violating products. The health department can write rules to enforce these steps.

Cell-cultured meat labels and definitions

The law defines lab-grown meat as products made from animal cells grown in culture. It says these products are not counted as meat under state meat laws. These products must be labeled to show they come from cells, tissues, blood, or components. A cell-cultured product is not misbranded only if it follows those label rules.
