Stricter ownership rules for appraisal management companies

The law bars an appraisal management company from being owned, directly or through another entity, by anyone whose appraiser license was refused, denied, canceled, revoked for cause, or surrendered in lieu of a pending revocation, unless that license was later granted or reinstated. Every owner must be of good moral character as set by the board and must submit to a background check the board requires. When applying to register in Montana, the company must certify it reviewed all direct and indirect owners and that no owner has had an appraiser or appraisal management license, certificate, or registration refused, denied, canceled, or revoked. These rules add screening and paperwork for owners and aim to protect consumers and lenders.
