New notice deadlines for municipal candidates

When a municipal candidate or their treasurer does not file required campaign finance reports, the Commissioner must send a written notice to the Secretary of State and the local election administrator. For municipal primaries, the notice is due no later than 5 days after the candidate filing deadline. For municipal general elections, the notice is due by September 24, or the prior Friday if September 24 is on a weekend. A candidate who fails to file required reports cannot appear on the ballot. These rules apply to municipal elections on or after April 20, 2025.

Effective now; applies to 2025 municipal elections

The law takes effect on passage and approval. The new municipal notice timelines apply to municipal primary and general elections held on or after April 20, 2025.
