Faster notice deadlines for municipal candidates

The Commissioner must send a written notice when a municipal candidate or treasurer has not filed required campaign reports. For a municipal primary, the notice is due no later than 5 days after the candidate filing deadline. For a municipal general, the notice is due by September 24; if that date is a weekend, by the prior Friday. Election officials use this notice so a noncompliant candidate’s name does not appear on the ballot.

Start date for new municipal election rules

The law takes effect on passage and approval. The new municipal notice timelines apply to municipal primary and general elections held on or after April 20, 2025. Elections before that date follow the old timing rules.
