Survey-based pay for Montana elected officials

The law ties pay for certain statewide elected officials to a regional salary survey. The Department of Administration runs the survey before June 30 of each even-numbered year. It compares Montana pay to North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Idaho, and includes the Montana pay in the average. If the survey average is higher, the official’s salary is set to that average starting July 1 of the next year. Covered roles include governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, superintendent of public instruction, public service commissioners (including the presiding officer), secretary of state, clerk of the supreme court, and the state auditor. The state auditor is added and covered starting January 1, 2028.
