Direct primary care for Medicaid enrollees

Beginning July 1, 2025, the law allows Montana Medicaid to cover direct primary care membership agreements if the health department adopts a rule. If you are on Medicaid and have a qualifying direct primary care agreement, the department cannot make you join primary care case management. The law also defines what counts as a direct patient care agreement so providers and Medicaid know what qualifies.

Medicaid direct care law starts July 2025

This law takes effect July 1, 2025. The state provides $5,000 from the general fund to the health department for the two‑year budget that starts July 1, 2025 to put this law in place.
