Permits and fees for truck platoons

Companies need a special DOT permit to run a platoon. A term permit costs $200. A trip permit costs $20 per trip. Each truck in a platoon still pays the usual gross weight fee. DOT can add limits or other rules on how and where platoons operate.

Rules to allow truck platoons

The law sets a process to allow truck platooning in Montana. The transportation department must study if it is safe here, including terrain, weather, and communications. If it finds platooning can be safe, the department must set rules and standards after talking with many groups. Platooning is allowed only after those rules are in place.
