Deadlines to turn in petition signatures

The law sets firm drop-off deadlines for petition signature sheets and their affidavits. Signature gatherers or their agent must submit by set dates tied to the final filing date in state law. If a signature is dated 287 days or more before the final filing date, submit by 273 days before that final date. If 196 days or more, submit by 182 days before. If 126 days or more, submit by 112 days before. If 98 days or more, submit by 84 days before. Each sheet must have a notarized affidavit with the circulator’s name, address, the dates collected, a sworn statement that signers are Montana electors who knew the petition’s contents, and notary details. After submission, the county election administrator date-stamps the affidavit, logs it, and gives a receipt. Late filings are rejected and are not processed. The law takes effect immediately.
