Firm deadlines to fill New Bern seats

New Bern’s Board of Aldermen must appoint someone to a vacant seat within 90 days. If not, the county board of elections must hold a special election within 180 days. Candidate filing stays open at least seven days. The county must publish legal notice at least 30 days before the election.

Marion elections move to even years

Beginning June 24, 2026, Marion holds municipal elections at the even-year general election. Races are nonpartisan and decided by plurality. City Council members serve staggered four-year terms.

Beginning June 24, 2026, if a school board vacancy is not filled in 60 days, the superintendent must notify the county clerk. The clerk must appoint a replacement within 10 days. If the vacating member was a party nominee, the appointee must be registered with the same party. If the seat is district-based, the appointee must live in the same district.

Belville elections move to even years

Belville holds municipal elections during even-numbered general elections. The mayor and commissioners serve four-year staggered terms. There is no town election in 2027. The mayor serves four years; council seats are staggered four years. There is no city election in 2027. Three council seats with 2027 terms, and the mayor and two seats with 2029 terms, each get one extra year. Elections resume in 2028.

Hickory wards, primaries, and 2027 pause

Beginning June 24, 2026, Hickory holds municipal elections at even-year general elections. The city uses a nonpartisan primary and election. Aldermen must live in the ward they represent; the mayor is elected at large. There is no city election in 2027. Three aldermen with 2027 terms, and the mayor and three aldermen with 2029 terms, each get one extra year. Elections resume in 2028.

Long View wards and 2027 election pause

Beginning June 24, 2026, Long View has five single-member wards. Aldermen must live in their ward but are nominated and elected at large. Elections are nonpartisan, held at even-year general elections, and terms are staggered four years. There is no town election in 2027. Three aldermen with 2027 terms, and the mayor and two aldermen with 2029 terms, each get one extra year.

Maiden election timing and staggered terms

Beginning June 24, 2026, Maiden holds town elections at even-year general elections. Races are nonpartisan and decided by plurality. The mayor serves two years. At each election, three council members are chosen: the top two serve four years and the third serves two years. There is no town election in 2027. New Bern city elections in even years

New Bern holds regular city elections during even-year general elections. The mayor and aldermen are elected in nonpartisan, plurality races. There is no city election in 2029. The mayor and six aldermen with 2029 terms each get one extra year. Elections resume in 2030.

Old Fort pauses 2027 town election

Beginning June 24, 2026, Old Fort will not hold a town election in 2027. Three aldermen with 2027 terms each get one extra year. The mayor and two aldermen with 2029 terms also get one extra year. Regular even-year elections resume in 2028.

Pink Hill elections shift and extend

Pink Hill now holds town elections during even-numbered general elections. The town has one mayor and three commissioners, each serving four-year, staggered terms. There is no town election in 2027. The mayor and one commissioner with 2027 terms, and two commissioners with 2029 terms, serve one extra year. The law also repeals older Pink Hill charter rules that conflicted with these changes.

Rural Hall election and vacancy rules

Rural Hall holds town elections at even-year general elections. Candidates are nominated like county officers. Vacancies are filled by the remaining council for the unexpired term. If the vacating official was elected as a party nominee, the county party committee’s pick must be appointed if sent within 30 days and only members living in town may vote on it. For 2026 only, petition candidates must file by 12:00 noon on July 6, 2026. Starting January 1, 2027, petition timing follows state law for elections in 2028 and later.

Snow Hill elections now in even years

Snow Hill holds town elections at even-year general elections. Races are nonpartisan and decided by the top vote-getter. Commissioners serve staggered four-year terms. There is no town election in 2027. Two commissioners with 2027 terms, and the mayor and three commissioners with 2029 terms, get one extra year.
