Beginning October 1, 2025, DMV may issue dealer plates for up to two years instead of just one. Dealer registration plates are replaced every four years, not every three. DMV spreads dealer plate expiration dates across months or quarters. These dates line up with dealer license renewal timing to reduce bunching.
Beginning October 1, 2025, if a dealer files a license renewal on time before it expires, the license stays valid for up to 60 days during DMV review. DMV must show in its system that the license is still valid in this window. DMV also sends a temporary license to display so the dealer can keep doing business. Dealer plates remain valid while the temporary license is valid.
