The new recognition path does not apply to several fields. Excluded are health care practitioners, architects, CPAs, engineers, veterinarians and vet techs, and lawyers. Also excluded are pesticide and structural pest control licensees; securities, investment, and athlete agent registrants; on‑site wastewater certifiers; and motor vehicle dealers and related licenses. These groups must use the usual North Carolina licensure steps.
Beginning October 1, 2025, North Carolina recognizes licenses from Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. You must establish NC residence and apply for the same or a similar license. You need at least one year of licensure, have passed any required exam, be in good standing, show competency, and have no disqualifying criminal history. Boards must post the exact requirements and documents on their websites. The new rules apply only to applications received on or after October 1, 2025.
A license granted through this recognition process is valid only in North Carolina. It does not let you work in other states or under an interstate compact unless another law or agreement says so.
If you had past discipline that is now resolved, the board verifies the fix before moving ahead. If you have a pending case in another state, the board pauses your NC application until that case is resolved.
