Limits on local hotel tax spending

Cities and counties that levy a room (occupancy) tax face new limits on how they spend that money. They cannot use it to build hotels or other lodging. They also cannot use it for services that mainly benefit residents—trash, water, fire protection, police/public safety/emergency services, affordable housing, or education—unless a local act specifically allows it. Beginning June 22, 2026, these rules apply to occupancy tax money collected on or after that date.
