Funding keeps Public Service Commission running

The law funds the North Dakota Public Service Commission for July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2027. It provides $21,268,997 total: $7,489,352 from the general fund and $13,779,645 from other funds. It supports 45 full-time positions. Money covers salaries ($11,026,304) and operating costs ($2,205,487). It also covers capital ($25,000), grants ($20,000), abandoned mined lands contracts ($6,000,000), a rail rate case ($900,000), railroad safety ($672,206), and legal services ($420,000).

Loan for rail rate complaint costs

The Public Service Commission can borrow up to $900,000 from the Bank of North Dakota to fund a rail rate complaint. The loan uses the normal interest rate for North Dakota government entities. The commission must repay it from any case proceeds after legal fees. If money expected by June 30, 2027 is not enough, the commission can ask the legislature for a deficiency appropriation.
