If you serve on the study committee and are not a state employee, the Legislative Council pays your mileage and expenses. If you are a state employee, you keep your regular salary and your agency pays mileage and expenses. Legislators on the committee get per diem at the rate set by law and travel paid by the Legislative Council.
North Dakota studies the feasibility, siting, and deployment of advanced nuclear power during the 2025–26 interim. The study reviews sites (greenfield and brownfield), grid capacity and needed upgrades, land use, and economic impacts like jobs and tax revenue. It also looks at small modular and micro reactors and any state law limits. A college or university is invited to help assess social interests and community acceptance. The committee includes two energy industry members; one each from the Public Service Commission, Industrial Commission, and Water Resources; and three House and three Senate members (two majority and one minority from each chamber). The legislative management reports findings and any needed bills to the seventieth legislative assembly.
The law provides $500,000 from the general fund and $500,000 from nonstate grants or donations, for $1,000,000 total. The money is for the Legislative Council to hire consultants for the nuclear study. It covers the biennium July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2027. The council must seek private matching funds. This is a one-time funding item.
