Tougher licensing rules for speech and hearing jobs

The law sets higher education bars to get licensed. Speech-language pathologists must have at least a master’s degree. Audiologists must have at least a doctorate in audiology. Speech-language pathology assistants must log 100 supervised hours and meet one of several credentials, including a certificate issued before August 1, 2026, certain degrees, or named coursework. A temporary license now requires proof you held an active license in the last five years, and the board sets time limits and steps to full licensure.

Audiology now includes vestibular testing

Audiology now expressly covers vestibular testing. The definition also lists testing, evaluation, counseling, and rehabilitation related to hearing disorders. This clarifies the scope of practice for audiologists.

Path to regain a revoked license

If your license is revoked, you can apply for reinstatement one year after the revocation date. The board may accept or reject your application. The board may also require you to pass an exam.

No hearing aid kickbacks for providers

Licensees under this chapter cannot receive any payment from selling hearing aids. This ban does not apply if the person also holds a license under chapter 43-33.

Stronger discipline and investigation for licensees

The board can subpoena witnesses and records, including patient records, during investigations. It can require sworn statements from licensees. The board can also discipline or deny a license for convictions that directly affect the person’s ability to serve the public, or when the person is not sufficiently rehabilitated under state law.
