Victim notification sign up and privacy

When you ask, police, prosecutors, courts, or custodial authorities must tell you how to sign up for the statewide victim notification system. If you clearly object, you cannot be forced to register and can opt out. You can stop disclosure of confidential or privileged information about you or your family. You must be told if anyone requests your identifying or confidential information.

Victims can speak on parole decisions

You may send a written statement before any parole or pardon decision, and it is kept confidential. If you are a victim of a violent crime, you may be allowed to appear in person at the decisionmakers’ discretion. Registered victims are told about upcoming reviews. After a decision, registered victims get the decision, any recommendations, and any parole or pardon release date before the person leaves custody.

Victims get prompt notice of releases

Registered victims and witnesses are told when a defendant is released, transferred, or escapes. Unregistered victims get the same notice from the custodial authority. Notice covers work‑release, education release, community residential programs, and transfers to mental health facilities. Notice must arrive in a reasonable time before a release or transfer, by any method likely to reach you quickly.
