Lower insulin costs on ND health plans

Health plans in North Dakota must cover insulin drugs and the supplies used to give insulin. Your cost is capped at $25 for a 30-day supply of insulin and $25 for a 30-day supply of covered supplies, per pharmacy or distributor, no matter the amount or brand. Covered supplies include meters, test strips, lancets, ketone tests, glucagon, pen needles, and syringes. Plans, pharmacy benefit managers, and pharmacies cannot add deductibles or other charges that push you over these caps. The caps do not cover insulin pumps, smart pens, continuous glucose monitors, or supplies for those devices.

Medicare Part D not under $25 caps

If you have Medicare Part D, these $25 per 30-day caps do not apply to your drug plan. You keep Medicare Part D rules for insulin and supplies.

HSA high-deductible plans: cap after deductible

If your plan is an HSA-eligible high-deductible plan, the $25 cap can start only after you meet the federal minimum deductible. This delay applies only to the deductible and preserves the plan’s HSA status. After you meet the minimum deductible, the regular caps apply.
