The law defines cell-cultured protein as food grown from animal cells without slaughter. It covers products from species under federal meat and poultry laws, and also reaches seafood other than siluriformes fish, fish, and game meat. It defines "deceptively similar" packaging as packaging that would mislead a reasonable person into thinking it is meat. It defines meat food product as food from farm or harvested animals and says cell-cultured protein is not meat. The law repeals the old section and uses these updated rules going forward.
The law bans calling or selling lab-grown protein as meat. Makers, advertisers, and sellers must label it as cell-cultured protein. Packaging cannot be the same as, or look like, regular meat packaging. Labels must follow federal rules from USDA or FDA and the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act. These rules help shoppers know what they are buying.
