AI-made political impersonations must be labeled

In North Dakota, anyone who makes or shares political content that uses AI to impersonate a person’s voice or likeness must add a clear label. The label must say: "This content generated by artificial intelligence." This covers images, graphics, videos, audio, text, and other digital content made in whole or in part with AI. It applies to content used to support or oppose a candidate, party, or political committee, or to promote or defeat ballot measures or petitions. You do not need the label if AI is used only to generate text, fix grammar or spelling, do stylistic edits, or enhance existing content without creating a new impersonation. The law defines AI as machine-based systems that create content from goals or data patterns, and excludes tools that only follow fixed rules and do not generate content.
