Heirs get quicker small estate transfers

The law lets a successor collect a small estate by affidavit instead of full probate. It applies when the total estate value, after liens and encumbrances, is $510,000 or less. At least 30 days must have passed since death. No court case to appoint a personal representative can be pending or granted. It covers money owed to the decedent, tangible personal items, and securities or other debt instruments. A transfer agent must retitle company or LLC shares from the decedent to the successor when shown the affidavit. This avoids formal probate and speeds payment or retitling.
