2 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.

Owners face fees if driver flees

The law makes a vehicle owner responsible if a driver flees after a police signal to stop. An officer can cite the owner within 96 hours. The fee is $100 for a first violation and $500 for later violations. You are not liable if the driver is charged for fleeing, or if the vehicle was reported stolen. You may give information to show you were not the driver. A lessor is not liable if the car was with a lessee and the lessor gives the plate and lessee details. You cannot be charged under both laws for the same incident. Rental car companies with rentals of 90 days or less are exempt.

New rules for traffic points

When the state gets a report of a traffic conviction, it records points on your driving record. If a violation is worth two points or less, it is kept in a separate, nonpublic record, but it still counts for point reduction and for suspension decisions. If your record reaches 12 or more points, the state must notify you it plans to suspend your license. The state can use reports from federal, military, or tribal courts in North Dakota.
