New weight-based car registration fees

Starting January 1, 2026, North Dakota sets passenger car registration fees by the car’s weight and how long it has been registered. Each weight band has four fees, tied to the law’s year groups. The bands and fees are: - Under 3,200 lbs: $73 / $65 / $57 / $49 - 3,200–4,499 lbs: $93 / $81 / $69 / $57 - 4,500–4,999 lbs: $111 / $94 / $79 / $63 - 5,000–5,999 lbs: $142 / $120 / $98 / $76 - 6,000–6,999 lbs: $175 / $146 / $117 / $89 - 7,000–7,999 lbs: $208 / $172 / $137 / $102 - 8,000–8,999 lbs: $241 / $199 / $157 / $115 - 9,000 lbs and over: $274 / $225 / $177 / $128. You pay the amount that matches your weight band and your year group.

Stricter pickup truck weight rules

Starting January 1, 2026, pickups use the passenger fee table, based on the truck’s shipping gross vehicle weight rating. The weight printed on the registration card must be at least twice the shipping rating. You must ask the state to raise the registered weight when needed so it covers the truck plus any load. A pickup, for these rules, has a manufacturer GVWR under 11,500 lbs, an unladen weight under 8,000 lbs, and an open box bed no longer than nine feet. These rules do not apply if you are otherwise exempt under the chapter.

House car registration uses 40% weight

Starting January 1, 2026, house cars use the passenger fee table, but the weight for fees is set at 40% of the actual weight. The state will not use less than 4,000 pounds. This rule can raise fees for lighter house cars and lower fees for heavier ones, depending on weight.
