Some listed OHV offenses are Class B misdemeanors. All other violations in that same section carry a $2,100 fine per violation. Violating other parts of the OHV chapter is a $1,050 infraction. Registration violations are $50, and the fine is cut to $25 if you show proof you registered after the ticket.
The law sorts off‑highway vehicles into Class I, II, and III based on size, weight, and wheels or tracks. Vehicles already registered for highway use are not put in these OHV classes. Electric bicycles are not treated as OHVs, so most OHV rules do not apply to them.
Cities and counties can set rules to regulate, limit, or ban OHVs within areas they control, including inside city limits. This can reduce places where you can ride and may improve safety or reduce noise in neighborhoods. Check local ordinances before operating an OHV.
Ages 12 to 15 may operate an OHV only after finishing the state safety course and carrying the safety certificate. Anyone under 16 must be supervised by a parent or legal guardian. Minors without a driver’s license or permit generally may not operate, except on a parent’s land or in an organized OHV sporting event. If an officer asks and you cannot show your safety certificate, it is presumed you do not have one. Fees you pay for the certificate go into the OHV trail fund for safety education and training.
